What courses should I take to become a social worker?

What are some highschool courses I should take if I want to be a social worker?

  • I'm seriously thinking about becoming a social worker. I really want to be able to help people, listen to their problems and be able to try to do something about them. It makes me happy in general just being able to help my friends out with boy problems or friend problems. I already handed in my course selection sheet for next year (I'll be a senior next year) and I put down that I wanted to do a bunch of art classes but I'm going to get rid of a few and take psychology...Is that a course I should take to become a social worker...Are there any others I should take next year to try to help me become prepared? I want to go to UAlbany to major in Social Work.

Social work does include curriculum in the area of psychology and sociology. So taking a psychology course would be helpful while in high school to learn the introductory information for psychology. If your high school has an introductory sociology class, that would be helpful as well. Not sure if you have already taken spanish classes or would be able to take one in your senior year, but it may be beneficial for you, because being proficient in spanish is helpful for some in finding employment. Some employers want bilingual social workers, for example. If you have any free time to volunteer, that would be really helpful for your social work admissions process as well. Good luck!

No specific preparation is required for a Sociology major other than the usual English/Social Studies/Math college-prep classes. http://www.ucop.edu/a-gGuide/ag/a-g/ If you are going to college, you can safely skip high school Psychology. You'll get plenty of that in college and the college classes will be better. One often over-looked class in high school is Typing (now usually called Keyboarding). You probably think you know how to type, but can you type FAST? In college, the difference between typing 60-80 words per minute rather than poking along at 20 can add up to hundreds of hours saved typing assignments. Be aware that in Sociology, the minimum degree required to have any chance of getting a job is a Masters. Continue taking it in college until you are fluent.
