So what type of students get into the top colleges as transfer students?
-
I know that Princeton is the only top school that doesn't take transfers at all. Other top Ivies like Yale and Harvard (which recently started taking them again) do take them but the acceptance rate is 1 percent to 3 percent. For MIT it was 6 percent, same for Columbia, for Penn it was 16 percent and for Cornell it was 27 percent. For Georgetown and Washington University in St Louis it was around 20 percent. I was thinking, what type of people usually get into these top colleges as transfers? My friend's son had an average high school career, was a B student at a heavily competitive magnet school. Slacked off the first two years, picked it up the final two, made A's in the toughest classes. Unfortunately his GPA is only a 3.4 but he has a 2260 SAT score. The kid is currently a high school senior. My friend said that he wants to send his kid to a local tier 4 university which is free (his son has a full ride) for the first two years. His son wants to get a 4.0 or high GPA the first two years there, and then transfer to a competitive university for the final two. Since if he applies as a junior transfer his grades from high school won't mean much. Basically his son wants to do the best possible at a tier 4 university for the first two years and then transfer to a prestigious university for his final two, is that even possible? Where do the top colleges take transfer students from anyways?

Answer:
umm i don't know if this is any help (not being a transfer student myself), but my friend's mom was able to transfer from Hawaii Pacific University to Yale. but i wouldn't just go by that to make a major life decision. your friend's son should consider a lot of different good schools with higher acceptance rates, like Whittier College in CA. Also, I don't recommend sending the kid to school with the sole purpose of transfer. you would do better finding good schools where he could get in, or settle for a good ol' public university (there's nothing wrong with that!). honestly, i'd recommend using a site like collegeprowler.com, where you can browse reviews and articles by students as well as adding info about yourself (like extracurriculars, SAT scores, and GPA) so the site can calculate individual chances for each university.
