Do you have to take a placement test at the beginning of college?

  • I graduated early, and I didn't do any type of schooling for 3 years. I've basically forgotten all of the math I was taught. I'm going to college in september, And I was wondering if a placement test is required, So they know what math class to put me in. I really hope there's no placement test... I'd be thrown back to middle school.

    Every college is different, but placement tests do have be taken before classes start in the Fall. In some colleges, everyone has to take all the different placement tests, some schools require placement tests only if your major has that subject requirement. Meaning, if your major does not have a math requirement, maybe your school will not require you to take the Math placement test. But if you are required to take the Math placement exam, if you do not pass it, that means you will have to take remedial math before you can go on to take your required college math classes. Placement tests are required to determine if you are prepared to take college math. It would be worse if you failed a college course lowering your GPA than doing poorly on a placement test.

Yes, you generally have to take a math and English placement test if you don't have any college credits in those areas. If you get placed in a lower math it's probably a good thing because higher level math would kill you right now.

Yes, you have to ! But it is a multiple choice in a computer at most schools. Don't worry, just take it ! You can always retake it many times as you want to ! And the question tends to be the same as the first time you took it. So, lolz ....don't be afraid !

Some colleges require placement exams, others don't. Community and state colleges are far more likely to require them than private and top schools, where you wouldn't get in if you weren't obviously smart.
