What good colleges are there?

What are some good colleges in the US?

  • You know how it goes. Teachers start putting pressure on you on where you want to go to college, and I'm that kid that doesn't even have a clue. :/ I'm good student (nerd :P), sort of lazy, fairly quiet but also enjoy socializing/parties/fun, and I'm from a school with about 4000 students and don't think I would want to go to a college or university much smaller than that. I guess you could say that I value my education, and I want my degree to actually mean something. At the moment, I'm pretty sure I want to go into a basic liberal arts college or public university. School-wise, I have a 4.0 unweighted/4.7-ish weighted GPA. I'm in my fourth year of French and in the French National Honor Society as well as Mu Alpha Theta, and I participate in the school's varsity choir. (I'm a sophomore by the way.) So, what are some colleges you think are nice/would fit me? And what are some you think I could be accepted into? I know that's hard to ask, since you don't know me and all, but suggestions are a good start. ;) I seriously would prefer things based on reputations, not just statistics, because those are things I already know for the most part. So seriously, just tell me what colleges you like/are applying to and if you think they might also be a good match for me. At least it would give me a place to start my search...

Try this first: http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/ The options on there should cover general preferences ;) Once you've generated a decent-sized list, go to the college websites and look at college review sites, too. Think about the campus culture (intellectual but relaxed; extremely competitive; jock school; nerd school; artsy school; etc.) and see which one would fit you best. Consider the programs and clubs available to you, physical surroundings, dorms, teacher-student ratio, and all other little things that add up to a huge difference ;) Don't forget to talk to your counselor and parents about finances. Many of the most elite schools have amazing financial aid; other excellent schools have (limited) generous merit scholarships; lower-end schools will be pretty desperate and throw money at anyone with a high enough SAT; etc. If you're from a middle-class family, you'll have to compare financial aid packages to see which schools you can afford more. Good luck next year!!

If you want your degree to actually mean something, you should consider majoring in something actually important to society. it frankly doesn't matter where you go (unless you get into an IVY) but how well you do. obviously a state school is better than community college, but in terms of one public school to another, there's not too much of a difference. in this economy though, if you do liberal arts, you are gonna have a tough time getting a job regardless of where you go. also, it's not a good return on investment at most schools...you'd pay through your nose to get a degree and you'll get paid like dirt at your job (if you get one that is). I know it's hard right now to do, but try to look at career choices instead of schools. find what you want to do and which schools give you the best shot at it, instead of the other way around, picking a school and then deciding what you want to choose. if you can do that, you'll most likely do better than going in blind to some random school. good luck!!
