Education & Training In order to become an SLP, you’ll need to complete a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. Master’s degree programs in this field accept students with bachelor’s degrees in most disciplines. However, they also require completion of certain core courses at the undergraduate level, including psychology, physiology, and linguistics. Exact requirements vary, so it’s a good idea to contact the universities you are interested in for specific details. Master’s degree programs in speech-language pathology range from 2 to 3 years in length. They include courses in anatomy, acoustics, neurology, and linguistics, as well as courses in development and voice disorders, counselling, and parent training. The programs also include a period of practical training. Some universities offer PhD programs in speech-language pathology. University research and teaching positions almost always require a PhD. After the master’s degree, PhD programs usually take an additional 4 to 5 years to complete.
