Education & Training Students interested in any of the health sciences careers should take advanced level math and science courses in high school. The minimum educational requirement for this career is a master’s degree in occupational therapy. To get into a master’s program you must first complete a bachelor’s degree. Although your bachelor’s degree can generally be in any field, you may need to complete prerequisite courses in areas such as anatomy and psychology. Check with the university program you are interested in to find out its exact requirements. OT programs include instruction in occupational therapy theory and skills, as well as physical, biological, and behavioural sciences. They also include periods of supervised, on-the-job experience. It generally takes 2 years to complete a master’s degree in occupational therapy. Once you have completed your degree, you must be licensed by your provincial or territorial occupational therapy regulatory body. Depending on which province or territory you want to practise in, you may also have to be a member of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and pass its certification exam.
