Quick college essay question 10 points?

I'm writing a college essay right now and the topic is this: Discuss some issue of local, national, or international concern and its importance to you I have already picked my national issue but i'm wondering if colleges want or do NOT want to see me citing works? for example: According to the New York Times.... etc. I would think they wouldn't want me to bother with that kind of stuff, but its very important when writing? What should i do? Should i completely avoid citing? I don't want to seem like i'm pulling statistics out of the air.

It helps prove that you actually studied and researched what your writing about and that you have proof as to what you are writing about. It also eliminates the possiblility that you plaguarized. you can cite sources in the text and off the text onto a difference page. for example: (Yahoo Answers;9/1/2011 by xxx)

Are you actually in college? And you have never learned the importance of citing references? I suppose you do not know how to write footnotes/endnotes or a bibliography, do you. Maybe you can get some tutoring.
