Quick college essay question?

Quick college essay question 10 points?

  • I'm writing a college essay right now and the topic is this: Discuss some issue of local, national, or international concern and its importance to you I have already picked my national issue but i'm wondering if colleges want or do NOT want to see me citing works? for example: According to the New York Times.... etc. I would think they wouldn't want me to bother with that kind of stuff, but its very important when writing? What should i do? Should i completely avoid citing? I don't want to seem like i'm pulling statistics out of the air.
