Is Music not a performing art?

  • I was looking at the university black lists and I noticed on the list of "acceptable subjects" Music was there but on the so called "blacklist" performing arts was there along with Music tech. Now I understand that Music is very different from Music tech but I thought Music was a performing art; why then is it classed as another thing altogether?

  • Answer:

Music is consider a performing arts in California.

Are you talking about A levels? Music A level is an _academic_ subject based largely on technical knowledge. The "performing arts" subjects you are referring to will give a large proprotion of their grade based on how good the student is at performing. If you are applying for an academic degree (non performance), the universities (quite rightly IMO) do not care how well you can dance or act. They also don't care how well you can play the violin. But that isn't what music A level tests - and they probably do care how well you can write an essay comparing different music styles or composers.

Music Is a performing art in my opinion.
