What is the best journalism school in Canada?

What's a good undergrad degree to get before going to grad school for journalism?

  • I really want to be a broadcast journalist. Right now, my plan is to major in broadcast journalism for my undergraduate degree and minor in political science. After that, I want to get a master's degree in journalism. To my dismay, however, many people tell me that this is not a good idea, because jobs in journalism are scarce. I want to keep my options open though. Would it be a better idea to wait and study journalism in grad school only? If so, what would be a good major to take that would lead to a journalism education or career and also serve as a substantial back up plan if journalism doesn't work out?

  • Answer:

Engineering will be a good back up plan and you could also specialize in engineering journalism where you might even find a job because most engineers would rather earn much more money doing engineering than writing about it. Most graduate schools of journalism require at least two years of paid full time journalism experience for admission and they study the relationship between journalism and society, rather than teaching how to write articles. Broadcast journalism is dying and I am not aware of any sort of engineering broadcast journalism.

Actually, you will have an advantage as a broadcast journalist. Journalism will never die. There will always be journalists, however jobs are more scarce now because employers are hiring fewer people with more skills to do more than one job. Instead of hiring one journalist, one web formatter, and one WHATEVER, they are hiring just one person who is capable of doing all three jobs. So, if you can do more than just write, you will have an advantage. With that said, major in communications for undergrad. Take some film classes, some journalism/writing classes, some graphic design/web programming classes, some news-writing classes, and some digital media classes. Keep your minor in political science. Become well rounded. Then, for graduate school you can major in Broadcast Journalism. Best of luck!

Have you considered a wider degree program, like communications? There are a lot of career opportunities in a variety of fields for a communications graduate. This will also encompass some aspects of media and journalism.
