How do I get a job in the NICU?

A nurse in the NICU??? help!?

  • ok. so im 13. and im constantly told im to young to be thinking about collage, or my career, or anything about my future. but i have a lot of thoughts despite comments i get. i have read tons of magazines, articles, seen shows, ect. about nursing in the nicu (neonative intensive care unit). nursing is one of my interest. but for a job specifically in the nicu, im told that it would be to hard, or heartbreaking to work in the nicu, because of what happends. but it can also be rewarding to see a baby make it out of that stage alive. and im just wondering if its way to early to think about this kind of thing, if its good to plan ahead or not, and if being a nurse in the nicu would be too hard, in your opinions. NO rude comments. thx.

Agreed. Its not too early to start thinking about it, I started saying I wanted to be a vet when i was reeaally little. But then again I've changed my mind tons of times, which is fine too. I don't know a TON about being a nurse in the nicu, but my mother was a rrt and worked there sometimes. ANything in a health care field can be challenging emotionally, but you sometimes have to learn to take emotions out of it and look at one task at a time (sounds like a terrible robot!) but if it's your passion you will find a way to excel at it

To be a NICU nurse you need to complete your nursing degree then take further studies to specialize in NIC. My suggestion pursue your nursing interests & consider specializing in NIC or any other area that takes your interest once you graduate & have experience in the different care facilities. Being a NIC nurse IS hard no one likes facing death especially of babies but as you have also said the rewards are monumental. You have your eyes open & are realistic. You will do units in your studies covering your personal bereavement management, although this will help it will never stop the dissapointment, if that happens its time to leave as part of what makes great nurses IS their compassion & caring. The NICU nurses Ive met all rotate out of the unit from time to time, just to have an emotional recharge. Still no matter what area of nursing you work in you will face death, its how you manage that persons care in the lead up that allows you to know that you've provided for them & made the time you could as comfortable as you could. The ones that make it are mutual lifelong rewards. We named our daughter (middle name) after my nurse that I credit with getting me through a life threatening pregnancy 10 yrs earlier ! So dont let anyone talk you intoor out of a career that you have a strong interest in. Not everyone can do it, whos to say youre not one that could have what it takes. There ARE angels that walk among us:)

It's never too early to think about what you want to do. Keep your mind open. If this is something you're interested in, you can look into summer internships during your high school years to see if it is something you really like.
