What the general classes required for international relation/affairs?

What to do about required classes that require cutting up animals?

  • I have decided to change my major to something a little less stressful. I am currently a physics major and have been pondering the idea of becoming an exercise science major. I love running, swimming, and cycling and it seems like a very interesting field to go into; however, two required classes are Anatomy and Physiology I and II, which require animal dissections. I am a vegetarian and firmly against animal cruelty. I don't believe that I should have to dissect a cat, pig, or any other animal that was raised and murdered for that purpose; however, my university does not have any student choice laws or alternatives that I know of, so the only way I could pass these classes is if I participated in the animal dissections, which is NOT going to happen. I have been considering other majors, but I'd really hate to have to give up on exercise science because of the ridiculous requirements in class. What should I do?

  • Answer:

Those aren't 'ridiculous requirements', they are crucial to your understanding of the material. I suggest you go talk to the professor. You might be able to avoid the dissections if you skip a few labs and still get a C in the course by working really hard at the rest of it. But s/he won't be very willing to help you if you make your views clear, since you've obviously projecting on everyone else.

Eri is right. There is nothing ridiculous about that. It's a very important step in the learning process. To add on to that answer, animals used for dissections weren't killed just for that. They use animals that died of natural causes.

I'm right there with you. You can't take "no" for an answer here. Remember, you're speaking truth to power. Come armed with the facts. For example, it's been shown that research/simulations used in place of actual dissections are absolutely as effective in an academic setting. One of the best reasons that doctors practice on cadavers is that they need to be exposed to death, decay, etc. You, I believe, don't necessarily need to have this kind of experience. Communicate that to the brass. Show that you've done your research, your willing to do more, and you're not willing to back down.
