What Master's degree can I go for?
-
The college I attended had a degree program for Software Engineering and a degree program for Computer Information Systems - Software Development. I got the CIS degree, although it wasn't until I was too far into the program that I had a change of heart and wished I could get the degree in Software Engineering. There is a lot of talk about the difference between a degree in Computer Information Systems and a degree in Computer Information Science. My school didn't offer a Computer Information Science, but when I compared the curriculum, they appear very similar with other universities within the same "league" of universities (obviously I'm not talking about MIT here), and obviously Software Engineering curriculum is significantly different from mine. Its frustrating when people talk down to me about my degree, even though I am in the same field as they are, have less experience, and make more than them. Advancing my education has been on my mind since I graduated (December 2010), and I figured now is as good of a time as any... I work for a fortune 500 company, make more than $55k a year, and I believe its in the cards to be able to afford it. I look at universities but don't know what degree I can go for... am I bound by the bachelor’s degree that I have? Can I get a Master’s in Computer Information Science or Software Engineering? This would all be pending acceptance and completion of the program; I just don't know how it all works. Any input you can give me would be great.

Answer:
You can go for either the Science or the Systems degree. If you go for the Systems degree you may need a few make up courses like in the electronics fields [EE] .

They will look at your transcript and see what courses/credits you have taken. First ask your employer, or another potential employer, what they would offer you if you got a masters degree. Ask college placement offices what students with new masters degrees are being paid, and where they are working. You should be able to get your masters in one of any number of areas. A BS in CIS, and a Masters in any other field, would make you an idea candidate for a program development position, supporting the core concentration courses of your masters degree. (Accounting, Economics, Taxation and Finance)
All undergrad "Engineering" degrees have a series of common courses not found in non-Engineering degrees. This is why all (ABET-accredited) Engineering degrees lead to a license in Engineering, and why applicants usually need an undergrad Engineering degree to get into an Engineering Master's. Your other problem is that your CIS degree is probably not CAC/ABET-accredited, which makes it even less likely to be accepted into an Engineering Master's. You have several options: #1 You can find a CIS Master's. #2 You can enter an Engineering Technology Master's. #3 You may be eligible to enroll in a "non-technical" Engineering Master's such as a Master's in Engineering Management #4 You can enroll for sure in a Master's in Technology Management. #5 You can take a series of bridging courses to become eligible for an Engineering Master's.
