How important is it to take chemistry in high school?

Do I need to take chemistry in high school?

  • I'm currently selecting classes and trying to weight the pros and cons of taking Chemistry/Spanish 3 in high school. I know I can graduate without them, and I am planning on going to college for either Art, Film, or English. I'm pretty sure knowledge of Spanish and Chemistry isn't necessary for these fields, but is it still all that important to take them? And will colleges still accept me even if I don't have them? I'm also taking some AP courses and I really don't want to take classes that are going to stress me out even more, especially if they aren't necessary.

    Most colleges require you to take either a chem or biology course (101, 111 or whatever) and a foreign language for one or two semesters. Some degrees won't require this, but it also depends on the school you are going to. Personally I think it is a money sucking way to keep you there as long as possible, but colleges/universities explain it as a "well rounded education." I would research the school(s) you are interested in attending and find out what their degree requirements are.

It really just depends on the university. Some of them make in extra tough to get in by requiring you to do subjects that aren't necessarily related to your degree. Contact the university about their requirements and see what they say. I definitely think you would be smart to at least keep Spanish, since having a second language is very important, but as for Chemistry, it's not worth the stress of doing it for no reason, especially if it won't be relevant to your career. Spanish, on the other hand, will be relevant for life. Personally, I love Chemistry and think it's a great subject, but if you are choosing between that and a subject that will help you in your degree/work later on, then you are better off going that way.
