Can I still get into an Ivy League school?

  • In my senior of HS I will take AP Calculus AB which is a year advanced (not counting the fact that I will be in an AP class). I am one year ahead of what you are supposed to be in. If EVERYTHING ELSE IS PERFECTTTTTTTT, can I still get into an Ivy League College If you went to one, what math course did you take. Do you know anyone who was in my situation but ended up in an Ivy???? That would be a big help...Thanks!!!

    There's really nothing we can say based on one class. The vast majority of the students applying to ivies will be taking advanced math classes like calculus or above their senior year; this is very common. It's not going to make you stand out. The ivies turn down thousands of valedictorians, straight-A students, and perfect SAT scorers every year. You need great grades and test scores just to compete, but that alone won't get you in - you need to find a way to stand out from the crowd.

All colleges look at the whole person and not just one class. It always helps to take the most advanced classes your school offers, but many people get in each year without being perfect math students, and on the other hand, even certifiable math geniuses can get rejected from Ivies because they have no social skills and flop in the interview. I tutored a student this year who got into Harvard and Columbia without taking advanced calculus. He just had a lot of community involvement and a great story to tell. Good luck.

It really depends on your GPA, Standardized Testing scores, location, family history, financial situation, racial background, extracariccular activities, application essays, and probably a dozen other things.
