Are a c.n.a. and a medical assistant the same thing?

Veterinary assistant or CNA?

  • Im in college and need to make more money so thinking of becoming a CNA but im really not into working with humans im going to school for veterinary medicine. Is there such thing as a veterinary assistant certification where you take a training program like a CNA?

  • Answer:

Are you talking about a veterinary technician program? Those would be the people who aid in animal care, assisting in procedures, doing basic lab work, and performing a few office tasks. There's a school near me that offers it as an associate's degree (AAS). You're not going to see as many job opportunities as you would with a CNA, because medical facilities that serve humans are most in need of professionals. Also, don't plan on making a lot... because you won't with either of these choices. A note: If you're thinking of going to vet school eventually, you may want to go for a BA or BS in something (anything) with pre-veterinary advisement. AAS' don't transfer well into other more general science bachelors programs.

Yes, there are multiple groups out there that offer certification as a veterinary assistant, however they aren't legally recognized nor typically highly respected in the veterinary field and are not likely to earn you an increase in pay.
