Is it normal to be scared about college?

I'm scared to leave for college!?

  • I'm going to be going to college soon and I'm very excited, but very scared and nervous. Mostly, I have a feeling I'm going to get really homesick (even though I'll still be in the same state as my family) and miss my family too much, and that I'm going to struggle with classes. I've heard the horror stories of how honor roll students (which is what I always have been) fail during their freshman year because they can't handle the new work load. I'm scared thats going to be me! I'll be leaving high school with about 24 college credits (from Dual Enrollment classes, AP classes, etc). Do you think I'll be well-prepared? Please, help ease my mind with this transition. I can't wait for college...but I'm scared out of my mind!

  • Answer:

You will be homesick. The work will be harder. But, with 24 AP credits already, you are much better prepared academically than 95% of the other students, and if you do not shoot for perfection, you will continue your fine academic record. The first couple months may be hard, but it gets easier quickly, and you will be so busy that you will be back home for break before you realize it. Good Luck, and remember to have fun. College is so much funner than high school!

It's normal to be scared - you may be a little homesick but you'll be fine! You'll make tons of new friends immediately, and you'll learn to be independent. There are so many people on campus to help you if you feel homesick or overwhelmed - from RAs to counselors. You won't fail your classes if you make sure you don't party too hard. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. College is about a lot more that just grades (although it is important to do well). Try to get involved in some activities that you usually wouldn't, or just try something new.

Most kids get homesick. I didn't get homesick that much. I kept really busy. Keep yourself distracted and it won't be bad at all. With 24 dual credits, you've gotten a great start. the thing with kids who fail during the first semester either has to do with alcohol/partying or weedwack-type classes. I think you are pretty much past most of the weedwack classes. Besides, you've already proven yourself worthy of college with 24 hours. Do i think you are well prepared? Absolutely! Ok, but if it's one of those high end private schools, they try really hard to have you fit in. Let yourself fit. If you reject them, it will be a miserable experience for you. Just remember to TAKE NOTES & PAY ATTENTION and you will do really well!!

Aw, don't be so afraid! I was pretty much you last year and my freshman year flew by. I assume you will be living in a dorm, that will be so much fun and yet such a pain in the butt. But trust me, you won't feel so homesick after the first week. It will truly be a unique, unforgettable experience. Yes, you will struggle with classes, it goes with the territory. However, you will learn from this and do better. You won't understand how to balance everything until you learn from your mistakes in your freshman year. I think you are already well prepared! So congrats, general ed. classes are completed with the required 30 credits! So, you basically have the credits a freshman would have at the end of their year. I suggest you choose classes that are unique, so your knowledge broadens (I took Hitler's Germany and it was my favorite class, so thought provoking. Not to mention Marine Bio). Be friendly and outgoing, everyone is a potential friend. Make time to study and go to the gym (you will gain weight if you don't!!! damn dorm life:)) I suggest using RateMyProfessors.com to look up potential professors and have an idea about what you are dealing with. Read your syllabi's and keep up with your work. Try your best and you should be fine! Good luck and have an awesome first year.
