Master degree after BE in ECE?

Can I obtain a Law degree and a master's degree at the same time?

  • I will be getting my bachelor's degree in Political Science next year. I was planning on going to graduate school to get my Master's in Public Policy. However, I think I'd make a great lawyer. Law school will probably take me 3 years. The Master's program should take no more than two years. Would I be able to obtain my master's degree while in my 3-year Law degree program, or do I HAVE to take them seperately?

  • Answer:

Many schools offer combined degrees, but you'll have to check with specific schools about whether they include the Master's in Public Policy as a possible option with the J.D. Generally, you can take a year off the time to degree completion from both separately if able to do some overlap of classes, so it would take four years in this case.

Other answers

There are many, many joint JD/MPP programs out there. For the most part they are four year programs - you do your 1L year at the law school and then the next three years you take classes at both schools. You generally have to apply to both programs separately, so you'll need the GPA and the LSAT/GRE scores for both. Please do your research and make sure this is actually what you need to get the job that you want. You're looking at $200,000+ in debt for a career that probably won't pay all that well. If you are not 110% sure that you NEED both degrees, don't do it. It may be worth taking a couple years beforehand to work, save money, research, and make the smartest decision possible.
