Do I have to take a SAT in order to go to college?

  • I graduated in 2009 in Guam. I don't remember anything about SAT testing and I called my school and they said to go to the college board but when I called to ask if they had my scores they didn't have my name on any records. So I want to go to college now but they need your SAT scores. I am rusty in my high school education. Do you really need a SAT score to go to college.

  • Answer:

for most colleges yes. they dont always go by the SAT/ACT but you still need to send it to them in order to be qualified. like i'm going to Dixie state college and they dont accept by the ACT but i still had to send it to them for some reason, i think for academic scholarships or something

Ya pretty sure. If they don't require it its highly recommended

Whether or not you need to take the SAT depends on the college. Not all colleges require it, but many do. Check the admissions requirements for the colleges you like, and see if they need the SAT. Are you still in Guam? One idea is to go to Guam Community College - or if you're on the mainland US now, to go to a cc in your state. Community colleges do not require you to take the SAT! And once you get your associates degree, you can transfer on to U of Guam or to any other university in the US, and most of them won't require the SAT for you, because you're a transfer student. This might be a really good option for you.

Most US 4-year colleges require a college entrance exam. The SAT is the most common, but many also accept the ACT. You can take either one, but you don't have to take both. There are some non-competitive colleges like 2-year community colleges, that don't require any test. Look of for colleges with "open enrollment". They usually don't require the SAT or ACT. If you have never taken the SAT, then the College Board would not have your name in the record. College exams are usually not given by the school, not even in the US. It's not considered part of the high school system, so it's something you have to do on your own if you want to go to college.
