  • Say it is around 1900-1910 or so. For a twenty year old male who completed up to eighth grade, how would he go about becoming a lawyer? He would probably finish through 12th grade then 3 years law school? Does anyone actually know or have a link? Thank you! white male

Being a lawyer or getting admitted to the Bar is a state-by-state question. But in 1900, in the West, California and Washington states, many lawyers were 'apprenticed' to law firms (it's called 'reading law') working for a lawyer and doing minor tasks. When either the lawyer recommended you or you could pass an exam, bingo! you were a lawyer. Up until about the 1970's, you could just ask to take the Bar Exam, whether you had been to law school or not, and if you passed, you were a lawye.(today they require law school). However, Harvard Law School was established in 1817.
