I want to be an Anesthesiologist.

What bachelors degree should I get if I want to be an Anesthesiologist?

  • I am currently in my second semester of my freshman year of college and my current major is Liberal Arts. I plan on attending Texas Tech University to get my bachelors degree before then going on to medical school to later become an Anesthesiologist. I have heard and read a lot about getting into medical school and for the most part I understand that it does not really matter what your major is. I am just wondering if my more refined goal of becoming an Anesthesiologist would be more easily achieved if I had a bachelors degree in biochem, biology, etc...

  • Answer:

It doesn't matter what your Major is, but the ugly reality is that most student will not make it into Medical School. They need to choose a Major that offers good career prospects if they don't make the Med School cut. Some good Majors from this point of view include: Bioprocess Engineering Biological Engineering Chemical Engineering (perhaps with Biochem concentration) Pharmaceutical Sciences

from what i understand, it really doesn't matter. if you are a science major, you might be seeing a topic for the second time in med school if you already learned it as an undergrad. and with all the med school prerequisites, you might be on your way to getting a certain major anyway (bio or chem, most likely). but i would say that beyond completing prerequisites, major in something that interests you. if you're going to be an anesthesiologist, you're going to be learning bio and chem for a long time. if that's what you love, major in it. otherwise, take the opportunity to learn about something else that you love.

Choosing a specialty now is just plain silly. You cannot possibly know where you fit in until you are in your clinical rotations in med school. It's true that your major does not matter. Just kick butt on the MCAT and have an impressive GPA, volunteer a bit and interview well. Good luck.

Why don't you try talking to your adviser athe the university you are attending. Patricia
