Is it normal that I still don't know what I want to do with my life, career wise?
-
I am a senior in high-school and I have absolutely no idea what I want to major in or what i want to do as a career choice. Right now, I am freaking out because I graduate in May and I still have no clue. I guess you can say I don't quite know myself as well I as should, like what my strengths are, what my weakness are, etc. I was so positive I was going into nursing (not that I have completely shot it down). But at the same time I'm interested in things like computer and video game development, so I considered that. But at the same time I would not mind working in film or theater production (not quite sure what field though). As you can tell I am very confused. I hope by my freshman year of college I should get it together.

Answer:
The most interesting people, and most successful, are the ones who waited until AFTER their college degree to pursue what they "really" wanna do. I read stats somewhere that 70% of degrees aren't even apply to peoples occupation. You're fine. Talk to a career counselor at your school or a local college.

Not everyone has a clear picture of what they want to do for the rest of their lives. High school is a confusing time for young people, and there's a lot of pressure to apply to college or university. When I graduated I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I decided to take a year off, and that year quickly turned into three years. I then decided to go to university and major in Art History. While I was in school I got a job at a restaurant. One semester into university I realized that I wasn't happy and wasn't interested in what I was learning, so I dropped out. To make a long story short, I realized that cooking was my true passion, and from there I got a job in a professional kitchen. I'll be attending cooking school this fall. My point is that sometimes you need to figure out what doesn't work for you in order to figure out what does. You're young, and you have plenty of time to explore your options. I guess the other moral of my story is that sometimes you fall into something and realize that it's what you were meant to do all along. My advice to you is to narrow down some of your options, then take steps to explore them. If you want to go into nursing, try volunteering at a hospital or retirement home. If you're interested in computers, take a few courses at your local college. Sign up or volunteer at a theater camp, or find a local production and offer to help out backstage if you're interested in that field of work. Nothing beats hands-on experience when it comes to choosing a career. And don't worry. You're young, and you can do whatever you put your mind to.

don't worry! thats fine not to not what you want. and its good that you at least have things that you like because if you had no interests, that would be bad hahha. you can go into college undecided and if you go into liberal arts, you can get a feel for many different majors and classes and areas of studies that may interest you. in the meantime, maybe talk to a guidance counselor or even a college professor to figure out what major may fit you best! don't worry! you'll find something that suits you and as soon as you find that thing, you'll be sure thats what you want to do :) good luck!!

Yes, it's completely normal. When I was a senior in high school, I didn't have a clear picture of what I wanted to be. I knew that I wanted to work with people, especially young people, but I didn't know the specific career to choose and the path to take to achieve it. It took time, experience, and growth to FINALLY discover my perfect field that would help me exemplify my passions and interests. Over the years, I've changed my mind SEVERAL of times. Most of my friends from high school are currently in careers that they didn't think about when they were young. We change over time and with experience...and so do our interests, how we see ourselves, and what we see ourselves doing. You're young...and the benefit to that is that you have lots of time and more experiences to undergo. Your perspectives will grow and you'll become more in tune with yourself...and you'll figure it out. :-) There is a very helpful book that helped me put everything (my passions and career aspirations) in perspective. It's called Listen To Your Life by Valorie Burton. Very helpful. :-)
