Is "Pre-Medicine" a major or just a track?

Premedicine major question?

• I want to major in premedicine. I know in college I'll have to take courses in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, anatomy/physiology, physics, english, and calculus. I understand that at most (all?) colleges you can't actually major in "premed" so then do I just pick one of those courses I listed and declare that my major?

  In theory if your school allows you to design your own degree you can choose pre-med as your degree title provided you follow their rules about designing your own degree program. The downside to that is if you do not get in to medical school your degree will qualify for entry positions in the hospitality industry, entry level positions in the fast food restaurant business, or entry level customer service position. If you do not want a minimum wage job after graduation then I would pick a major and for pre-med it can be any major as long as you take the required courses that the medical school requires. This therefore means majors in biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering will help you to meet the entry requirements for medical school. Also mathematics, psychology, and government are other popular pre-med majors too. My advice would be if you are looking to medical school I would either pick a major that will help you meet the requirements for admission to medical school or pick a major that will help you get a job if you are not able to be accepted into medical school that might help enter medical school if you reapplied. If you pick the latter then I would suggest considering nursing, respiratory therapy, or medical technology as possible majors too. So to answer you question you can major in area and even design your own degree if your university allows it. However the best majors are ones that you will either help you get a job after graduation or a major in whilch several of its courses are required for entrance in to medical school.
