University application dilemma.

Common Application vs. University Application?

  • As you may know, the common application will be released on August 1 so I had a few questions concerning it. Do all universities accept the common application? Is it better to do the Universities application, or is that too much effort? Where can you find the common application? Any other comments concerning the application can also be written. (information that will be useful to me)

    Most universities accept the common application. The purpose of the Common App is to save you time and effort filling out applications. Say you're applying to 10 schools and they all accept the common app; that means you only have to fill out one application and submit it ten times, as opposed to filling out 10 separate applications that all ask for the same information. The Common Application can be accessed on CommonApp.org as of August 1; in the meantime, you can check the website for a list of the 400 colleges and universities that accept it.

There is also the Universal College Application (universalcollegeapp.com). It is similar to the Common App, has some members the Common App does not, and lets you include a link to web content, like youtube videos or an online portfolio, in the application.

Not all universities do. You can do either, it just depends on how many schools you're applying to. For example, if you're applying to 6 schools that all take the common app, then use it. If you're applying to 3 schools and only 2 accept it, then you could use the common app for the 2 and fill out the university app for the one, or just fill them out separately. Honestly, not sure where the common app is located because it's been so long since I've used it.. Hopefully this helped you a little though.

Most universities will use one or the other, not both. Not all accept it, though the number that do has been increasing. Though a lot of schools will add their own supplemental questions or essays to the common app, so it doesn't always save that much effort.
