What does it take to be an accountant?

Should i take an accounting program with little or no knowledge of what an accountant is/does in college ?

  • I'm about to to graduate high school, i applied for some courses and i thought, why not apply for accounting its simple math with a lot of work afterwards, now i have a choice whether to take this program in college even though i have little or no accounting knowledge or experience. Should I or should I not take the program? Will they teach my from scratch?

  • Answer:

Yes, they will teach you from scratch. Take the first two courses. If you don't love them, find a different major. With accounting, you have to REALLY love it. The program is really hard, the further you get into it, and if you don't love accounting to start with, you will be miserable by the time you graduate. Also, if you want to have a lot of promotions and a high pay, you will need a CPA license. In most states, to sit for the CPA exam, you need 150 credit hours, of which 30 are in accounting. To get that many hours, you will almost certainly have to get your masters, so be prepared to attend grad school.
