How do I become an electrician?

How does someone become an electrician? Is trade school necessary?

  • I am a recent college graduate and in the process of looking for a job. I have a degree in economics, but still cant find an entry level job. I search my county for jobs (orange county california) and I constantly see electrician jobs available. I never thought anything of it because its not a skill set I have but im so frustrated being underemployed (working as a waiter with a degree). For an entry level electrician they make up to $35 an hour, which honesty Id take at this point. If I decided I wanted to get in that field, would I have to go to a trade school? If that is the case, there is no way im doing it, but is there like a paid internship or nething along those lines? How long am I looking, in terms of years, before i can enter this field? thanks everyone. much appreciated

    a two year degree at a community college will get you hire as an apprentice they will even help with job placement. you could open your own business with a contractors license after your apprenticeship is done

you might check with you local electricians union and see if they have an apprenticeship program. other than that community colleges or trade schools work

Yes, trade school is required. And you go in and out of trade school as you do your apprentiship. And until construction picks up again there is a surplus of electricians right now too. There are jobs but there is also a lot of turnover.

Being an electrician is a serious profession. These guys get massive hourly pays because they worked hard for it. You might want to ask around the many schools in CA that offer short term courses/trainings to minimize your costs.
