What are my chances of getting accepted to Michigan State University?
-
I'm very interested in attending MSU as a transfer student after I attend a community college for two years, but my credentials are a little bit below the average student's. As of right now I have a 3.21 GPA (I don't believe that is weighted) and received a 25 on my ACT, my strong point being a 31 in the reading section. I'm currently in my second semester of my senior year and taking 3 AP classes(Gov't, English Literature, English Language) and doing very well in them. I am the percussion section-leader in the marching band, editor-in-chief for the school newspaper, and I have assumed a leadership role as a member of the yearbook staff. I am very hard-working and put in many hours after-school for both the newspaper and yearbook. My GPA is a little low because I didn't do very well in math classes as an underclassman. I'm now taking a financial math class with an A-, though, and I plan on retaking an algebra class online that I received a D+ in to boost my GPA. What are my chances of getting into MSU? Thank you for reading!

Answer:
They won't look at your high school grades if you are transferring from a community college. They want to see your last academic progress. Plus college courses out ways high school grades.

I got to MSU, and I've heard it's much easier for community college transfer students to get accepted than high school seniors. If you can prove that you have high grades in classes that relate to your major, then they won't focus too much on the math scores. Retaking that D- class was a good idea, though. Also, you seem to have a pretty solid resume, so that should make them want to accept you.

No one can really answer this question because the target is constantly changing. Every term fewer or more students return leaving more of fewer seats open in classes. Budgets each year go up or down. One year, there might be a place for a few more students. The situation could be reversed the next year. Do not ever only apply one place. Always have fall back positions. You just never know if the next person who applies is a total genius or the nephew of someone who has promised to donate ten million for a new medical school. The second link is to admission criteria that will give you some idea. If you visit the campus or get a chance to talk to someone in admissions, ask it they have a profile of students they usually accept for transfer. Some colleges do this and it gives you a better idea one way or the other.
