What are the chances for getting into Johns Hopkins?

What are my chances of attending Johns Hopkins University?

  • What are my chances of getting into Johns Hopkins University? Okay, so i'm a junior in high school and I'm getting a little nervous about my chances of attending this school. I really, really want to go here. My profile: My transcript consists of 7 a's and one b freshman year. three b's, one c, and three a's in sophomore year, and straight a's junior year. My freshman year gpa was a 3.83, sophomore year i struggled miserably and ended up with a 3.22, and my junior year i managed to come out with a 4.25 which brought my cumulative to a 3.79. My sat score is really bad, a 1500/2400. But, I'm taking two sets of sat prep courses in hopes of raising it up this summer. I'll be retaking them in August. My parents are from nigeria so i classify as an african-american. Extra-Curriculars include: International Studies Program member Track & Field (freshman year only) National Honors Society Member National Honors Society Tutor Chess Club Math Club (president) Bio-Medical Club (secretary) Maryland Excel Scholars Program Member Washington Adventist Hospital (volunteer) Greenwood School Daycare center (volunteer) Sat Prep Club Bio-Medical Club (Newsletter Coordinator) Bio-Medical Club - (Health Fair Volunteer) National Park Service (volunteer) College Preparation Workshop Series (at UMCP) - attendee So what are my chances? Any advice? Should I apply early admissions or regular? I'm freaking out so please any advice would be great! I'm also a maryland resident. In addition, I'm planning on majoring in Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten education :)

  • Answer:

Your SAT score needs to improve to at least 2000, preferably 2100 in order for you to be competitive. If you can't do that by November, don't apply early action. Your ECs are pretty good. Focus like a laser on achieving a substantial raise in that score and do the same for your essay which will be critical. SAT and essay are critical at this juncture.

Your status as an URM (under-represented minority) will help you tremendously (you can thank affirmative action for that, as ridiculous as I think it is). Your GPA is adequate, but you really need to boost the SAT at least 200 points. Hopkins is competitive. And that list of soft's (your extra-curics), while impressive, are rarely used as qualifying aspects of an applicant. They will calculate an index based on your SAT and GPA, and put you into three piles--in, out and maybe. Only if you are in the maybe pile after the calculation will those soft's matter. So don't count on them. Good luck.

"My sat score is really bad, a 1500/2400" That is really your only issue. Colleges like to see your grades improve, so that's no problem. But your SAT score is your ticket inside the door. Minority or not, you're not gonna get a second look at a school like Hopkins without some serious improvements. I'm talking about getting up to 2100+. One of my students wanted to go to Hopkins for pre-med. She's black and had tons of extra-curriculars and decent grades... Except she got a 2010 on the SAT. She didn't get in ED, waitlisted RD, and finally rejected mid-summer. Hopkins is so, SO competitive. I'd recommend NOT doing Early Decision. The ED kids all have stellar SAT scores. I hate to be tough, but you really can't rely on your minority status, your EC's, your residency, or your sports (unless you're really good). All of these things are SUPPLEMENTARY to your SAT score. If they see you have a 2100+, all of your EC's are taken into consideration as an asset.

For a good chance of admission, you need an SAT score of at least 1900. I have taken account of everything in your resume in making this estimate.
