Teen language in Advertising?

Best foreign language to learn if heading towards an Art/Advertising/Entertainment related major in college?

  • I already am bilingual (fluent both in Tagalog and English) but my school counselor tells me that I need to complete 2 years of a foreign language or 3 semesters of it in the local community college. Is it really necessary? Can I just take a test in Tagalog (i doubt this)? I'm leaning towards French because it seems pretty competitive but my parents are pushing me towards Spanish since Hispanics are everywhere and almost everybody is taking it. The thing is I'd really want to have a competitive/impressive application for college. Help? Please. :) ( thought about Japanese too.. coming from Asia and all.)

  • Answer:

Chotto matte kudasi. Ok I am back. I would say spanish. Likely you want to market to US right? There you go. Plus its easier to get real life experience since you just have to go to the store to speak it. Likely if you say mooshi mooshi answering the phone people wont get it. Japanese is hard. Period. And it only applies to a very very small portion of the masses. Spanish spreads continents. And if you been to japan, the ads are all white girls in english anyways! French might be rewarding, but are you going to live in canada or france? you need only take language if your doing a BA. BS do not require this.

Depends on what you seek to gain from entertainment advertising and they area of concentration that you plan to engage in. Pricewaterhouse Coopers predicts India, China and other BRIC nations will experience exponential growth in entertainment and media expenditures, accounting for 25% of global growth over the next five years. Per your concentration, internet advertising will continue to blossom so long as broadband internet becomes more accessible throughout developing nations. Coopers also states that Latin America is the second fastest-growing region behind the Asian Pacific region. That said, I recommend studying Chinese and/or Spanish. Moreover, given the complexity of the entertainment advertising field, you could set up your course schedule where you are taking three consecutive semesters of your choice of language to coincide with your graduation. I say this because if you are not able to find a job immediately after graduation (as was the case with +40% of university grads in 2010), you'll have the opportunity to study abroad and gain valuable insight into the culture (of the language you choose to study) and improve your fluency at the same time. Such a highlight would surely make your resume standout above your competition!

I find German easy. Like you I'm also fluent in Tagalog and English.

Sarah, don't think in terms of "what language would look impressive on my CV" or "what languages my parents would be pleased if I learned". Choose a language to learn because YOU would find it interesting and fun! Do some research on a culture that you find interesting... say, Japanese culture. Based on the culture that you find interesting, then check out some media from that country on the Internet (like videos in Japanese on YouTube). If the media looks interesting and you like how the language sounds and it's written, then go for it! You should really try telling them that you are proficient in Tagalog and would like to being tested in it instead of having to complete 2 years of language classes for school. If that doesn't work, then choose a class corresponding to the language you want to learn, and DO MORE outside the classroom than what you do in classes. Spend time with your selected language everyday in the form of real, native media.
