Is it possible to be a part-time surgeon?

Is it possible to be a orthopedic surgeon AND a family/general physician?

  • I know that family/general physician and orthopedic surgeon are two different fields of medicine, but I was wondering if it is possible to train as a orthopedic surgeon and a family/general physician? If so, how long would it take to train in both medical specialties after med school?

  • Answer:

It's not possible to practice in both at the same time. Because of the ongoing licensing requirements, you would let your certification in one area lapse while training for the other. It takes 3 years of Residency to train as a Family/General Physician after Medical School, and 5-8 years to train as an orthopedic surgeon (depending on how deeply you specialize). There are some specialties that overlap, and have led to the creation of "double board" residency programs, where you essentially complete two residency programs at the same time in preparation for a very specialized Fellowship (one example is Internal Medicine and Pediatrics - you complete both in 4 years instead of one in 3 years in preparation for a specialty like Pediatric Cardiology or Pediatric Oncology). There are NO double residencies that include a Surgical Specialty.

That certainly would be very strange. Why would you want to do both? Are you even in medical school? By the time you get there, you may find out that one of them is totally not suited to you.

It's possible if that really is what you want to do, but not very practical. You can't train in both programs at the same time. You would have to do one, give it up to then pick up training in the other area. You would certainly be more well-trained, but you would not be able to perfect your specialty in both because you would practice in only one department, not both. After 4 years getting your bachelor's and then 4 years for medical school, family medicine residency is 3 years, and orthopedic surgery residency is 5 years. That would be 16 years until you finish school and all your desired residency programs before you can practice on your own.

Yep..most likely not at the same time though..Start with one then go to the next.
