What do bakers/pastry chefs major in college, and how many years of french should I take?
-
I want to start my own bakery, but I'm just a freshmen in high school. However, I have set up a three year program over my sophomore, junior, and senior years for a program that will give me six credits for college. Since the credits are only valid at CMCC, the nearby community college, and since owning and starting a business is expensive, I think I will go to CMCC rather than a more expensive pastry school. So by the end of my senior year, I will be ready for college level french, which I'll probably need in pastry baking. I plan on having having my minors be french and business, and majoring in whatever pastry chefs major in. So can you please tell me what they major in and how many years of french I should take? Thank you.

Answer:
I think you have a better plan than a lot of people years older than you, who want to go into culinary arts. There are some very good community college programs in culinary arts and specifically in baking and pastry arts. You're right--you don't need all the debts from an expensive private pastry school, limiting your options and dragging you down at the start of your career. You could go on to a four-year college and major in business. Some programs have a focus on entrepreneurship, which could help you start your own business. Not all of your community college courses will transfer--the culinary arts courses are considered vocational, and probably won't--but if you find a good advisor and plan carefully, you can put together the best course schedule for both pastry training and college transfer. But better yet, after pastry school, why don't you use your French language skills and go to Europe, and find a place where you can work and learn from some master pastry chefs? That could do you a lot more good. For that, you'll need to take enough French to be able to communicate adequately, plus the basic pastry and baking training to get in the door of a good restaurant or bakery kitchen. Good luck!

Regular four year college do not offer. A bachelor degree in baking or culinary arts. You will not find a pastry or culinary major or minor

Many community colleges offer programs in culinary arts. Find one near you that does, and go there. You'd be studying culinary and/or pastry. Try to get a job in culinary/pastry as soon as you're old enough to work. Find a good pastry shop, and get a job there doing anything they need you to do. You want to learn about the business.

You take culinary arts at a community college along with an accounting course and maybe a business administration course. a four degree is not needed for this. French is irrelevant. What you need to do is just practice a lot at home making pastries. If a pastry chef has a degree it has no bearing on them becoming a pastry chef. Being any kind of chef is a trade and you go the trade school route.
