What degrees do I need to get?
-
I'm a high school senior graduating this year and all these college degrees are so confusing to me! I'm planning to go to community college to get my general ed out of the way, and then I want to transfer to a 4 year college to get a degree in nursing. On the community college papers it askes if I want to transfer with an AA or AS degree or without one. Are either of those required to get into a nursing program? Also, what kinds of degrees do I have to get to get a nursing degree, or is it just called a nursing degree? I honestly have no idea what any of this stuff is and when I ask my parents they just say they're handeling it. It's making me crazy because people ask me what I'm doing and I don't know what to tell them except that I want to be a nurse! Can someone PLEASE explain what I need to do because I'm not getting clear information from anyone else!!!

Answer:
With an associate's degree, you will not be able to become a nurse. The highest you can go in the health industry would be to the position of Medical assistant, which is an entry-level job as is. To become a nurse, you would need to enter a university and receive AT LEAST a B.S. in Nursing. To be a nurse practitioner, the minimum requirement is an M.S. in Nursing (2 years after receiving B.S.). By 2015, NPs must have a minimum DNP to practice http://rn-to-msn.org/msn-to-dnp-programs/

Nursing is not like other majors. You are best off going to the 4 year school from the start.
Perhaps instead of letting your parents coddle you for the rest of your life, you should be doing this research YOURSELF instead of relying on them or us to answer it for you. This is YOUR future, so why aren't you taking more responsibility and initiative to figure out what it takes to get where you want to go? It's your choice if you want to transfer from community college to a 4 year university/college for nursing. Please note that not all credits are transferable so you might be forced to repeat certain types of courses. Also, if you want to be a nurse, you'll generally graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). Also, you will need to fulfill the requires to be a registered nurse (RN) which is the higher level than LPN. You'll need to have outstanding grades, good practicum reports and references in order to get the placements you want. Do the research because no one is going to do it for you since it's your life.
AA is associates of arts and AS is associates of science. If you want to go into nursing you would want an AS. I'm not a nurse but I'm pretty sure the degree you graduate with is a BS in nursing.
Get your AAS in nursing in community college. Take the RN exam. Get a job and let your employer pay for your BSN.
