What do you think about the University of Iowa?

Do I have a shot at getting into University of Southern California?

  • I'm transferring from my college here in Iowa, and I have already applied to two different campuses in the Cali State system for fall 2011; however, after doing my research, I have not seen any Cal State schools show up on any top 100 lists for academics or otherwise. I have seen University of Cal schools on the lists, but Cal State, I have yet to see. As a result, I question attending a Cal State school. However, it's too late too late to apply to the U of C campuses for fall; therefore, I've started an app for USC. I actually thought about applying to USC from the jump, but even with my 3.37 GPA, it just seemed like the school was out of my league and that I would need a higher GPA to have a shot. Please do not take this the wrong way, I believe each individual regardless of race or background should be judged equally; however, this is college we are talking about, so I'm just going to be real and up front..will my being an African American male along with my GPA work in my favor? I saw that among the student body African Americans represent the lowest percentage of students who attend USC. Also, I saw on the app where it asks are you the first generation to go college which I am; therefore, again, will that also work in my favor? I am applying to schools here as back up, but I already know getting into any school here will not be an issue with my GPA and being an Iowa native. I know I'll probably here some why not just finish here, and I have given that much thought. I mean both U of I and ISU are in the top 100 in the nation, Drake (which I got accepted to and turned down) is ranked 3rd for best in the midwest, and both Grinnell and Cornell are in the top 100 for liberal arts schools. However, I have no intentions what so ever to start a career here, and Cali is where I want to start a career; therefore, I just think it would make for a better transition from here to there if I finished school in Cali, so I can meet people and network. If I finish here, I think going out there not knowing anyone will be very difficult. I mean if i do school here, I can try to get an internship out there, but if I do not get an internship out there then what.. Anyway, if you know anything about CSU, Cal State or have any input, I'm all ears. Any advise or suggestions would help. Btw, I know CSU is known for its cinema program which is very competitive; however, that's not what I attend to do there, I want to major in sociology and possibly minor in theatre. Now I cannot say I wouldn't take interest in the cinema program once I got there, but that's not my intended major, sociology is the major I will be putting on my app.

  • Answer:

Hi! USC prides itself on being the most diverse school in the world. Thus, being out-of-state and being of minority race can certainly work in your favor. I haven't heard much about the sociology or theater programs here at USC. As for Cal States, though they are not known for their academics, they are known for its more hands-on approach and focuses more on application of studies rather than learning theories in class. I have heard that many employers prefer hiring Cal State students over UC students because they are more knnowledgeable about how to apply stuff learned in class in the real world.
