How much will I get paid as a Veterinary Assistant?
-
Hi there everyone! I am 22 and have been a kennel attendant and tech assistant for different hospitals and pet stores since I was 19. I have a lot of experience caring for, handling, and treating animals. I do not have a certificate in the veterinary feild, but feel that I am more than qualified to take on the job as a veterinary assistant, which i have an interview for. I also plan to attend veterinary school soon. how much do veterinary assistants with this amount of experience generally get paid by the hour in Georgia?

Answer:
Because Georgia's laws require licensure to work as a "veterinary technician" and limit the tasks that may be performed by an unlicensed veterinary assistant, your pay is likely to be close to minimum wage. With your experience you may be able to negotiate a slightly higher hourly wage, but remember that many normal duties and how they are expected to be performed vary greatly from clinic to clinic so you are still looking at quite a learning curve to get as good at your new job as at your old one.

It depends on the clinic. The definition of "assistant" tends to vary considerably from clinic to clinic. If the clinic is one where they employ assistants rather than technicians then you can expect to get considerably more (10-15/hour). But, if the clinic also has technicians, then you can expect to get minimum wage... but with your experience you might be able to negotiate slightly higher. Many clinics just call their kennel attendants assistants, so you might just be doing that again. It also depends on the demand for these positions. I have found that in areas where there are a lot of prospective vet students (example: area where the vet school is located or schools with pre-vet programs) they tend to pay less. This is because sooooo many students are applying for these jobs mainly for the experience and less for the money. If you are in this area, expect minimum wage despite previous experience because there will be many students that are willing to work for less (or even for free).
It all depends on your experience/education. If you have no real training but you're there to clean the cages and wash down the floors, you might not get much more than minimum wage. If you have been to school or been trained on a farm or otherwise have a lot of experience with animals you might be of more value to the Veterenarian. as you have some exp. you might get round 20 -30 dollars pa.
it depends but when i worked at my friend's veterinary office you did all the dirty work, but you need the experience for your resuma so the money won't matter to much in the long run
Vet assistants start at minimum wage, and can usually make up to $12 an hour no matter if they took a vet assistant course or not Vet Techs are higher up and require a 2 year vet tech course- they can make up to $15/hour
