-
What and where? I want to stay in the same state. I want to be a Pediatrician. What classes should I be taking, and what do I major in? How many colleges can I apply for. Im still a sophomore. But I'm just curious and want to know what are good schools. And what should my grades be to get accepted ?

Answer:
You can apply to as many schools as you like. To become a pediatrician, after high school you would go to college and earn a bachelor's degree. That will take about 4 years. You can major in anything you like, but you will need to take some classes (called "pre-med classes") that med schools require you to take before you start there. In your final year of college, you will take the MCAT (another standardized test) and apply to medical schools. Not all applicants get into medical schools, and this is the point in the process where the most people are turned away, so you will want to have good grades on your college transcript. At any rate, you would then enroll in med school, which is another 4-year program. In your last year you will apply to residencies. Residency is where students are trained to be surgeons or oncologists or pediatricians -- young doctors work with and are supervised by more experienced doctors who provide them with a sort of on-the-job training. I believe that the pediatrics residency is 3 years. Because you are going to be paying tuition for 8 years (during your residency you will not pay tuition and you will get paid just as you would at any other job, but you will not be paid much given how hard you are going to work. Some of your compensation, obviously, is going to be the specialized training), you're going to want to save money where possible. You want the best high school grades you can get, because that will maximize the chances of "merit" financial aid, and unless a private school (like Rice or Baylor or SMU) offers you a good enough financial aid package that going there would not be more expensive than going to a public school (like the University of Texas or Texas A&M or Texas Tech), you probably want a public school (which will be cheaper because the taxpayers will be helping pay for your education). If you are going to use student loans for part of this, keep in mind that pediatricians do not get paid that much, compared to some other kinds of doctors. You don't want to be forced into a specialty you don't like just so you can pay back your loans. So it's going to be extra important to keep your costs down. At the same time, it's not unreasonable to take out some loans, because you are likely to be earning a good salary, compared to people who are not doctors, once you are done with your residency. The 6 schools I just mentioned are all good schools. They are certainly not the only good schools in Texas, but they're a place to start. Get the best grades you can without letting grades take over your life. Keep in mind that there are other things about you besides your grades that colleges and universities will be looking at, so don't become so focused on grades that you lose sight of the rest of the important things about you. When you are a senior and making your final decisions about where to apply, you may realize that you are not likely to be accepted to one or more of the schools on your list. That's okay. There's more to life than school, and there are a number of schools in Texas that can get you ready for medical school, and as long as you can get into a couple of them, you'll be in good shape. You may want to make some sacrifices in order to get the best grades you can in college, because getting into medical school is harder than getting into college, but I don't think it's worth it when you are a high school sophomore or junior. In college, you are going to have to fulfill 4 sets of requirements: 1. earn a certain number of credits in order to graduate (not everybody counts credits the same way) 2. take and pass a list of classes designed to make you an educated person in the general sense. These are called "general education" requirements, and not every school has them, but almost every school does. You'll dabble: some science, some humanities, some social sciences, and so on. It's a great chance to learn about things you've always been interested in but have never had the time to pursue 3. take and pass a set of classes designed to give you a focused education in one discipline. That one discipline will be your major 4. take and pass the pre-med classes When you get there, if you want a major in something like science or engineering, you will probably want to take the first classes for your major during your first semester, because so many of the classes in those areas have prerequisites that have other prerequisites, and so on. Students in other fields tend to begin with general education classes. You should be able to meet with an advisor before you register, and that person can help you figure out what you want, exactly. Good luck with it all!
