What does a nursing career entail?

Question about career in nursing (?) & College Major...Some help please...?

  • Hello! I'm 19, still starting in College. I have decided to change my major, which was psychology. I felt very troubled because I found myself not being able to make up my mind on anything else of my interest. I've been going over the majors offered at my university and I've chosen to go for nursing. I live in New York City, and if I'm not mistaken there's always available space for nurses (Or so I hope for later on). But I'm stuck because if I had to become a nurse I'd like to work primarily with kids, for example a place like "St.Jude's Children Hospital" for kids with cancer. It's not that I wouldn't want to work with others but I do feel more inclined to working with kids in need. Now what I do not know is if after I graduate (4 years) would I be able to work as a nurse at a children's hospital? Or would I need other type of "knowledge", degree, etc. in order to work as a nurse for kids? As I ask this I feel it may come across as a "dumb" question, but I really don't know so I ask. My university targets "nursing" 4-year degree and Nursing Master's degree for continuing studies, but I've seen nothing related to kid's health in specific, so that's why I ask if with a 4 year degree in nursing I'd still be able to work with them?

  • Answer:

Almost all nursing graduates start out in acute care--the regular hospital. You want pediatrics, and can do that after you've been working for awhile. You might look for internships or volunteer opportunities in a children's hospital to help you along. don't assume you can just "get into nursing school" -- it is VERY competitive for most schools.

Other answers

You can't be guaranteed you'll get a job working with kids, but if you're flexible about moving, that increases your chances. Also, you need to talk to your school about this - while you can switch majors, most schools severely limit the number of students they let into their nursing program, so it might not be an option to change to a nursing major, or you might have to wait or take pre-requisite courses before getting into the program.
