Double majoring in college, is it difficult?

Is double majoring or a minor a waste of time? My college counselor said so herself...?

  • I am at a community college right now. So I spoke to my counselor and told her I want to be an education counselor myself. I told her I want my B.A. in Sociology and she recommended Psychology better and then I said, what if I double major and she said for what? And I said because I am interested in something else as well and she said that it is a waste of time because there is so much competition in this world and getting into schools are hard and she said that she always recommends to finish your Maters FIRST and then go back to school and double major if you have time. She also said that if I want to be a counselor like herself that your Bachelors does not matter. Only the Masters. So what do you think? Should I listen to her? Or...you think she's right.?

  • Answer:

    She's right

Sounds like she doesn't know what she's talking about. You can't go back later for a double major. You'd have to go back for a second degree, which means what you could have done in 4 years will now take 8. And your major for the bachelors determines what graduate programs you can get into. If you want to get into a psychology-related masters program, you must major in psychology. Sociology isn't useful for that masters, but you can certainly take courses in it during the bachelors and double major if you want to.

Double major a waste of money, would you want two high school diplomas?

I don't recommend double majoring. You have the same career oppurtunity by just getting your degree with a major in Psychology. If you want to get dual degrees, that is a different story. For instance, my brother got a degree in Computer engineering and a degree in Electrical Engineering. It was a LOT of work and he was going for specialist jobs. All in all, I personally agree with your counselor. I don't know about the "Bachelor degree not mattering" though. But I'm sure she is speaking from experience.

I graduated with a BA and a minor. I disagree with her I would at least work on a minor because that is one more special skill that you have. Then when you go back for your Masters you will have a good start. My ex got a teaching degree and minored in Autism and I know that most of the jobs she applied to said that the specialization in Autism was what go her the job. When you first start on your career path, your youth and inexperience in the field makes it harder to get jobs so you need to find something that helps you stand out. Also, my degree is in teaching and my minor in the psychology of women. I was accepted to a grad program in Psychology even though my major was in another field because of my minor. Go for a minor it gives you better options. But I wouldn't try for a double major.
