Whats the difference between college and university?

  • Im almost going to high school. And they say, "Its never too late to think about college." So I thought of it. So isnt college where you have to take 4 years and then u get a deegre and university is optional if u want a higher degree... RIGHT??

    It will depend on which country you're in. In the US, colleges and universities offer the same degree - bachelors - and that's the one most students coming out of high school are trying to get. Colleges tend to be smaller, private, and offer fewer majors; universities tend to be larger, public, and offer more majors as well as professional programs (nursing, medicine, law, etc). Colleges offer few if any graduate degrees; universities offer more graduate programs.

Think of it like this, a university is made up of colleges but a college is just singular. Within a university, there could be a college of psychology, college of arts and sciences, college of medicine all within the university itself. A college is more direct in what it offers. A community college doesn't offer professional programs or degrees, but can offer your AS or AA.

nope. they're the same thing. the main difference is that universities are bigger and produce more research, but both offer the same bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees.

In Scotland where I stay college is for the people that did not do good enough at high school to get qualifications to go to university so they have to get the things they failed at school to get into university, you will never get a degree at college, you do a specific subject maybe you want to be a lawyer then at college you do english, maths, physics etc the same as at high school full time for a year or two then apply for university, you can also go to college in the evening, called night school.

No University is just a bigger version of college. However it does not have to be they're used interchangeably.
