Tips for commuting by train?

College student commuting tips PLEASE!!?

  • Attending a csu in a few months to finish off my last 2 years, will be commuting an hour there and back everyday I have class or practice (if I make the team). TIPS PLEASE!! like should I always have certain things in my car? How do I multi task to save time? etc etc Please no obvious remarks!

Have you weighed the costs of doing this? Gas is high and cars have an unfortunate tendency to break down at awkward times. Even couch-surfing (www.couchsurfing.com) during the week would save you some--and you'd meet interesting people. Listen to tapes of lectures or tape practice problems/essay questions. Then record yourself solving the problem or answering the questions. Keep drinks and food--even peanut butter cheese crackers--in the car. Keep a suitcase with toiletries and a change of clothes, too, in case something goes wrong. A spare notebook is good, too, in case you don't get your textbook and notebook/computer into the car. Back up your computer at home and leave the copy there. Even if the car and computer are totaled, you won't have to go back to Square One on your long term assignments--which tend to become more numerous in the last two years.

you should get the thing you hang on the back of your chair to stor ethings and dont give anybody rides home bc they will eat up your gas money and you need that for school ppl will def ak you just say no i have something to do

Only thing I can think of is...always have a good snack bar or something in your car....a good fruit and nut bar especially if you're playing a sport.

A 1 hour commute is not much out of the ordinary in California. I commuted 45 minutes each way for 7 years when I lived in Costa Mesa. You may want to get an adapter to plug your iPod into your car stereo. Then see if you can download podcasts of lectures, even if they are for the same course but from a different school and play them in the car. Do not wear headphones. The CHP will stop you. If you do sports at the school you need a change of clean clothes in a bag in the car. Beyond listening to podcasts it is too dangerous to multitask in the car.

This will be difficult, especially if you have a morning class. And you will need to be at school for most of the day and not be able to return home until you are fully done with class and/or practice. So if you forget something at home when you leave, then you are screwed. I commute to my university as well, but it only takes 15-20 minutes. I have had to make an adjustment, such as waking up early, making sure everything is packed up and ready to go to school the night before (textbooks, HW, food, etc), and everything like that. I think your 1 hour commute every day will be possible, since people commute like this every day, but it will also make you lose a lot of money for gas costs and inconvenience you if you have any tests, projects with other people, etc. You won't want to miss a test because you overslept, and since it takes you an hour to get to school, you have to be prepared. If I was you, I would probably just get an apt, especially if I still had 2 years left. I'd get a few roommates to costs would be minimal. It's just not worth it. But it depends on you. I'm assuming it's still cheaper to just commute, so good luck! It's going to be tough.
