Do transfer credits count towards GPA?

Transfer to community college to raise GPA?, then transfer back to 4 yr school.. CONFUSED, HELP!!?

  • I currently attend Marquette University and am a 2nd semester Sophomore...my GPA is only a 2.35 due to laziness/apathy caused by not knowing why i'm in school or what i'm going to do...Anyways i started working at a hotel a few months ago and LOVE IT. I've decided that i want to transfer to a school with a good hotel management program such as UNLV or University of Houston..problem is these universities/programs require a GPA of 2.5-2.75. Since Marquette costs around 40,000 a year, I was thinking about withdrawing after this semester, and working at my hotel job full time next year (because i already signed a lease for next school year). I've already messed up this semester pretty good, and will probably end up with BC's and C's again..my question is should i transfer to a local community college and take credits to get my GPA up in order to transfer to one of these schools in addition to working next year??? Will the credits i take at a CC elevate my GPA from marquette at all?? Even with a 2.5+ do i have a good shot at getting into one of these schools/programs?? P.S I also have 4 W's on my transcript... I'm now sure of what i want to do with my life, but not sure how to get there...sorry for the convoluted question...

  • Answer:

It is a bit more complex than that. You are limited to how many credits you can accumulate before you transfer to your terminal university. You are already a sophomore--you are already about maxed out on units to transfer. Your GPA at Marquette will not be impacted by classes somewhere else. You will just get another GPA from the CC, and the GPA at Marquette will be on their transcripts (not the CC's). I suggest you try and contact someone at UNLV in the hotel program and see if you can talk to them. They may recommend something different .
