Can I still get into an Ivy League college if I got 2 Bs in sophomore year?
-
I dream of going to an Ivy League school (preferably Yale or Brown), and I have dreamt of this for my whole life. I'm going into junior year of high school, and I'm really stressed out about 2 Bs that I got (one in Honors Spanish III, the other in Honors Chemistry). I plan on working extremely hard next year to get straight As, like I did in freshman year. I'm currently number 2 in my class and have six extracurricular activities, including varsity tennis. Will getting two Bs affect my chances of getting into an Ivy League school?

Answer:
Well, it's not going to help, but even a 4.0 certainly doesn't mean you'll get into these schools. Everyone applying has fantastic grades, great test scores, and tons of activities, and they accept 10% or fewer of applicants. Stop worrying about a couple of B's and start worrying about how you're going to stand out from everyone else.

You sound just like my sister =] Two B's will not make or break you. Yes, grades are important, but colleges look at improvement as well. If they see that it only happened for a small part of your high school career, it won't matter. Plus, extracirriculars are a must. Make sure that you're in as many as you can, as devoted as you can. If you're doing to minimal requirement to be in ten, they don't care; they want to see you leading in activities (my sister has done karate for 13 years, piano for 10, teaches karate 5 times a week, treasurer in student council, and way too much more...) Just try your best =] Good luck!!

Absolutely, I have a few friends that go to Ivy, one even had a C! I would not make a habit of it, but if you do real well on the SAT, keep that class rank top 5, you will have a great shot.

The B grades may affect your chance of admission to a slight degree, but they will not prevent your admission if the rest of your record convinces these very selective schools that they want you as a student.

You should be okay, but a lot of emphasis is also out on SAT's, ACT's and SAT II's so really study hard on those as well! Good luck!
