Columbia university summer program?

Getting into Columbia or Brown University?

  • Now I know I’m just like the hundreds of other kids who have posted every grade and achievement they accomplished in their life to see what chances people think they have of gaining admission to a school but I’m curious of what people think. This situation is based both on realistic and assumed facts. What chance would a student have of getting into either Columbia or Brown University if: Weighed GPA – 3.1 Sat – 2220 Reading - 750 Math - 720 Writing – 750 Act composite – 33 Clubs- History Club 2 years Junior/Senior Interact Club 2 years Junior/Senior Debate Team 1 year Senior Sports- Jv Lacrosse 2 years Freshmen/Sophomore Varsity Swimming 2 years Junior/Senior Varsity Lacrosse 1 year senior Volunteer service - Part of red cross disaster response Lifeguard at school pool Volunteer at local Hospital Habitat for humanity Member of the Hauppauge Fire Dept senior year Work experience – National Guard Lifeguard at local beach and School Pool Waldbaums grocery store Also Counselor in Incoming Freshmen orientation program Senior year, and joined the National Guard the end of Junior year, as 68w Healthcare specialist and attended Boot camp summer between Junior and Senior year. Member of the Commack Volunteer Ambulance youth squad Junior and senior year. Member of band and Marching band freshmen and sophomore year. Ran the Long Island Marathon Senior year. Iv been in all honors class and a few AP classes up to Junior year and all AP classes Senior year. If I were to get a couple great recommendations and write a stellar essay, is there any chance at all and does anyone know anything about transferring to Columbia? From what I understand it is very difficult. Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

If your weighted GPA is 3.1, you have no chance of admission to either. However, with your fine SAT scores there are dozens of fine universities that will accept you.

The other posters are right about your GPA being low, however with your strong SAT scores and fantastic extracurriculars, I'd say it's worth applying. Even if you don't get into those two schools, you will definitely be able to get into some great places.

To be frank, your chances of getting into Brown or Columbia are not very high with a 3.1 weighted GPA. Everything else, except the GPA, is fairly decent. Sorry.
