How do i start my college essay?!?

  • im in 11th grade and im in an ACT class and we have to write a college essay and i really don't know how to start it..any help?

    Hi Megan, A few thoughts: As you can see from the answers so far, you need to be clear about the theme of your essay. There's a famous first line written in the 1830's by Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton often referred to by writers that goes..."It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness." The idea being that the novelist was being overly dramatic and cheesy. If you decide to use humor in your essay, you could begin with that classic line. Anyone with some background in English will get the joke... and then go on to say... "Now that I have your attention, let me tell you about why I want to attend XYZ University." Just a thought. Try being creative, funny, and interesting. And do it while avoiding mistakes in grammar or punctuation. Regards.

1st, what is your essay about. 2nd make an introduction that grabs the reader or makes the reader WANT to read more. 3rd follow APA style guidelines. Title page, header and all. This will be really impressive (trust me). 4th. brainstorm, outline, and re-write, re-write, re-write. When you think you finally got a good essay. Sit down and re-write it again.

first u start of with a hook then background info then thesis whats ur paper about???

I would start it with a quote. When my sister started college, they asked her to start her essay off with a famous quote and I've since watched my brother-in-law do it, as well. It's what I would do. For some odd reason, I think it makes it easier.
