What is a 'paramedic nurse?

Can I be a paramedic and Registered Nurse at the same time?

  • I live in Houston, TX. I am thinking about becoming a paramedic in the near future and then go to nursing school. I would like to work as a RN then as a paramedic on days off. I have heard this is okay and also that it is not allowed. Something to the words of..you can't be a paramedic while being a nurse, you can't work below your education level. I would like to know what the truth is and also have a supporting source. Information that is based on Texas law.

  • Answer:

I don't know about Texas law specifically, but I know many people that do this in other states. It's actually very beneficial....the training to become a paramedic would probably help to get you through nursing school, while the training you receive in nursing school would also help to make you a better paramedic.

You would have to keep your scope of practices separate for each. When working as a Paramedic you could not do a skill or give a medication that you would as an RN. The Board of Nursing could also hold you accountable to a higher standard even though you are working as a Paramedic. Thus, you could lose your license very easily as an RN for a mistake made as a Paramedic. The Board would say "As an RN you should have known better". Several RNs do hold Paramedic certs but if working as an RN such as in Flight RN, the higher license of RN will be the one utilized. The exception would be a Flight Paramedic who just obtained the RN license and does not meet the requirements to be a Flight RN. In that situation they would remain working only under the scope of practice of a Paramedic or be asked to resign until they met the requirements of RN. Usually it is the situation of working with a lower license or certification that creates the problems and not working under the higher license while having another lessor certification. Check with the Texas Board of Nursing. You may also have to disclose any outside employment to all of your employers. No hospital will want you working a 24 hour shift as a Paramedic and coming straight to an RN job.

Yes, of course you could. Each skill would improve the other. It'd make you a very valuable paramedic and one hell of an ER nurse...if you wanted.

Yes you can be both. I used to know a man who was both.
