Will I get into a good university?
-
I am a 10th grade student in New York State. I have high expectations for myself. I would like to study architecture and become an architect. I also love history and want my university to be historic as well. I have not taken the SAT's but I have a GPA of 3.6, I am involved in several clubs at school, which all happen to be service clubs, I am involved in Boy Scouts, I am a very unique person with a unique personal story. I happen to have schools like Yale, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, Princeton, NYU, and Tufts, and the University of Virginia. While these are so seletive and prestigious it would be my dream to attend any one of them, and i hope that for some reason they might want me. I also have the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, University of Washington, University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign, University of Maryland- College Park, University of Pittsburgh, University of Masschusetts- Amherst, Northeastern University, Penn State, University of Texas- Austin, Catholic University of America, University at Buffalo SUNY, Temple University, and CUNY City College of New York. Yes, this is a long list and I would like to thin out out but I am afraid that none of these universities will like me because they get so many applications and I don't think I really stand out. Based on the information that I provided 3.6 gpa, several service clubs @ school, boy scouts, and unique life story which of these universities might accept me and be at my level, but also remember that I would love to go a prestigious and historic university to study architecture. Thank you so much for your help!

Answer:
Architecture is not a degree program which is offered at all universities. Also, some limit architecture to graduate school. Start there to thin out your list.

You really don't have a shot at the Ivy League schools with a 3.6. I would say you have a decent shot at most of those other universities, but you're going to be just about average for most of them, which means you're not going to get much in the way of scholarships, especially from out-of-state public universities. The University of Buffalo is probably your best bet in terms of getting in and affording it.
3.6 GPA isnt going to cut it, sorry to be blunt. Also you need to evaluate the job market for architects for the upcoming years (its not so great). You need to involve yourself in more than just clubs that meet once a month (you should play sports). Schools want intelligence but they would like to couple that with athleticism and personality.
It sounds like you have a lot going for you, but it is important to keep that up. Your junior year is your hardest and most important year. As long as you continue to keep your grades up, get a good ACT or SAT score (which if you start studying now with practice book I assure you will do really well), do volunteer work. Colleges really appreciate volunteer work, so do something creative. You will be sure to stand out! See I have a 4.0, 25 ACT, and lots of volunteer work, and I got accepted into all the colleges I applied for. But I didn't apply for any ivy league because i would have to have a 29 or better on my ACT.
Hey! You sound like a wonderful applicant. I'm actually an Ivy League kid, specifically Columbia, and I can tell you GPA is not everything. The admissions officers look at everything in a holistic process. Although your grades and test scores are of course factors, they are interested in your extracurricular activities and most importantly essays. Make sure you do activities you enjoy and work hard. Do your best in all that you do and I can promise you it will pay off. By the way, keep up with Boy Scouts. It looks amazing! God bless and best of wishes!
