What is a top tier school?

Does what high school I go to affect my chances of going into a top tier university?

  • I was wondering if I went to a normal/bad high school (in terms of reputation), but I got straight A's would I have a higher chance of getting excepted into a top UC school compared to going to a very good high school but getting mostly B's and maybe even a C. Thanks.

  • Answer:

No, the high school reputation doesn't affect the colleges you can get accepted to the grades you get, the difficulty of the classes you take, your score on the SAT and/ or ACT tests, your participation in the community and in clubs, and the a-g requirements all determine your acceptance into a UC college. I recommend you to go to the high school you want to go to and try your hardest in that high school. One other thing if the program AVID is available to you in the high school of your choice try to join because that program can and will help you a lot in order to make college possible for you. GOOD LUCK!!!

Okay, I will put it this way, it will not affect your chances directly but it will affect them indirectly. If you go to a bad high school then here are your disadvantages: 1. Your won't get a chance to take a lot of APs as your high school may not offer them. 2. The kids may influence you to do worse and you may not get enough help from a guidance counselor in terms of college admissions, you may miss deadlines and even be misinformed about what you need to get into a good school. 3. Some high schools offer SAT help and prep courses which can help you on the SAT, going to a bad high school will cancel out that option. 4. Some high schools have teachers that teach you to be good students and good test takers, you won't get that from a bad high school. People can say I am being pessimistic, but going to a bad high school limited me severely with college admissions. I think you should go to the high school YOU BELIEVE YOU WOULD DO BEST IN. At the end all that matters is grades, a 3.8 is a 3.8 GPA whether you have it at a crappy public school or a top notch prep school.
