Are there AP Exams online?

Do colleges care more about AP classes or AP exams towards entrance?

  • So the high school I am going to doesn't offer as many AP exams as the others in my area. If I self studied for the exams and then got 5's on them, would colleges care or is it only the class that helps towards entrance? I would also be taking as many AP classes that my school offers, but then self study for the tests that are more passable.

I STRONGLY disagree with all other posters. A US college would be VERY impressed if you self-studied for an AP exam and scored a 4 or 5 on it, not having taken an AP course in the subject! This tells them you are REALLY smart and motivated to learn - that you can do college level material on your own without even taking a course! Can't think of a college in America that wouldn't be impressed by this. Also, taking AP exams and getting 4 or 5's on them is the easiest college credit you will ever get - I took 4 AP exams, did well and finished my college studies in 3 years. I especially encourage you to take the English AP exams - freshman writing courses at college are basically a waste of time if you already can write essays and term papers well. If you are a science or math or engineering type, take all the science and math AP's if you can afford it - again this saves you taking intro level classes in college which may be a repeat of what you already learned in high school. Good luck.

AP exams get you credits while in college if you pass them. They do not show up on your HS transcript. Only the AP classes that you take while in HS do. So, essentially, the colleges will care more about the classes because they'll be able to see the actual grades you put up all year in the class.

AP exams... those classes are just test prep. All that most colleges care about is if you are pushing yourself which you sound like you are doing.

I took AP courses in high school, but not a lot of them. And I got all ones on my AP exams. And I still got into a good college. So, I personally do not think they care. I think they care that you TOOK AP courses in high school. That's all. The thing that helps most to get into college is the amount of extracurricular activities you are involved in. Trust me, my SAT scores weren't the best, but I participated in extracurricular activities and it helped.

To be honest, in my personal opinion, I do not think colleges care much about AP. I went to a school that only offered one AP course, myself and all of my friends got into good schools. Some of us took college classes at the nearby college. I would not worry.
