University application dilemma.

University application dilemma - will this impede my chance of getting into uni?

  • I was due to study at university last September, but we had had a difficult family situation in the study and my father was not supportive of me beginning my studies. We still had to pay the university for 3 months accomodation that I did not take up. My place got postponed until January and everything was in place for me to go - and yet my father backed out of financially supporting me AGAIN. He is actually abusive and has been trying to prevent me from going to university for several years - still, I was shocked to find that he did it again. The university have told me I can apply again for September 2010, but they want me to stay in university accomodation until then. By September, I will have enough money to support myself for accomodation and tuition fees for then, but as I also had to pay for accomodation the last time my dad backed out, I cannot pay for the university accomodation from now until then again. However, I'm worried that if I refuse their request, I will not be granted another place for September. Do you think it would be fair of them to not permit me to study again because I did not pay for the place in residence this time?

  • Answer:

University officials will work with you up to a certain point. They have been quite understanding, but are not going to continue waiting....it would be fair for them to rescind the offer after this much time has past.

Your father seems to be unreliable so I wouldn't depend on him. Universities offer help on fiance so i think you should talk to them about your situation. Maybe you should also think about getting a part time job to pay for your accomadation? Also you can apply for a student loan/grant to help out.

Talk to the uni and see how flexible they can be re: the accommodation payment. However, understand that they very likely are going to require you to pay. The reason for that is because by your signing up for accommodation, and not withdrawing before X date (there's always a specific date), they held that place for you. They didn't give it to another student. And believe me, they could have - there are normally more students wanting places in accommodation than there are places. Because they held the place for you, they couldn't rent it out to another student, and they could have; but now it's too late for them to do so. You rented that room. You didn't withdraw before X date, and they held it for you. They can't now rent it to another student, and they could have. You owe them the money.
