What do I need to do to become a firefighter?

  • Im 19 years old and a freshman in college in California. I have recently decided I want to pursue a firefighting career. I am an eagle scout and that is about all the experience that I have. I know there are summer fire programs and things but what is the best way to pursue this career from where I am right now. I really want this and I will honestly do whatever it takes all your input is appreciated. Thank you

    Do you know that about 70 percent of fire department responses are for medical problems? Heart attacks, strokes, auto accidents. Nothing wrong with that, but it is not what most think is a firefighter's job. Reflecting that, many fire departments want an applicant to be an EMT. Start by getting your EMT certification, and think about maybe pursuing a paramedic license too. If there are any volunteer fire departments work with them. Look up all the departments for which you'd be willing to work, find out when they test and start taking every test you can. Often the tests are not too difficult, but you will be going against a lot of other candidates. You'll need to score really well on the written test. Stay in shape, don't do anything dumb that you might get in trouble for. Work on your interview skills. If you don't get hired right away - persevere.

Requirements vary from place to place. Go to your local fire hall and ask the firefighters there. No one else can tell you better for where you live.
