If I get my GED and a degree can I get a good job?

Can I get a four year college degree with a GED? Please read all of it?

  • I'm having a really hard time right now, life problems, moving a lot and I am really behind in high school credits. I was going to get my GED, then go to a community college for two years, get an associates degree then transfer to a University and get a four year degree there. I was told by some family members that I can't do that.. But I heard from others that I can.. I havent taken the SAT and I'm not going to cuz your dont need it for community college, I just wanted to know if my plan will work? I wanted a high school diploma but it would take an extra year and hundereds of dollars to take the make up credit online classes and summer school. It adds up to almost a $1000. This isn't an option as I would have to borrow a lot of money which i just cant do. If my plan would work, (if I can get my GED and get a four year degree) am I limited in what classes I can take in college? I know that my job options are going to be lowered, but it's better than nothing. Lots of info would be appreciated, and any websites you can refer me to so I can know for sure. Please and thank you :) P.S. Could I go straight to a University on a GED? Would they still check my high school records if I did?

  • Answer:

Most definitely you can get a B.A./B.S. with a GED! When you fill out a college application, they actually have a section asking you whether you have graduated high school or have a GED. You CAN get into a school with one. You CAN make something of your life. Don't let ignorance coming from your family stop you from making a good life for yourself. It's great that you are considering a four year university. You can apply to both a community college and a four year university. Either way, best of luck. Go onto the school's website or contact the schools and THEY will give you the best answer humanly possible. They will be telling you exactly what you need. Best of luck and if you need anything else, feel free to contact me.

You can. Even Harvard accepts the GED. My daughter was too ill to go to regular high school and got a GED. She is getting her PhD in engineering at a top school now.

Yes you can get a 4 year degree with just a GED. You need to go to a community college first and then transfer to a university. You can discuss your plans with a counselor/academic advisor at the community college you're planning on attending. They can tell you what classes you need, requirements, and how you can reach your goals.

Thing

In the U.S. you would be best off by taking the SAT/ACT and going to a 4-yr college/university OR by going to a community college without taking the SAT/ACT. They still have a placement test so they know what classes to put you in (English, Math, etc). I think what you mentioned in the first paragraph is perfectly fine. If you have any questions, call the school(s) that you're thinking of attending and ask the admissions office.
