Why does student wants to enrolled nursing course?

Student Rights and Academic Freedoms?

  • Having frustrations here... I missed 2 classes with my univ. professor-- which were documented (illness). The first class I missed because I enrolled late and there was no chance to attend the class in time. The professor tried to tell me to drop the course. I explained what happened and he seemed ok with it, but the Dean said the professor has a right to remove you from the class for any reason he chooses because he's in control. which seems crazy to me. Also I am upset because of academic freedom issues--- I wanted to research first hand with the author of the works we are studying and the professor advised me against it saying this person is probably too busy and that HE, the professor wants to be the first source I go to. I feel that is invasion of academic freedoms to research how I choose. Also, I have done this before with other authors of university texts and never had a problem with either the teacher or the author. Ideas?

  • Answer:

Regarding the absences and possible dropping of your from the class roster, that sounds like an issue for your college's dean's office or the chair or MSO of the department the professor is a part of. Re: academic freedom with textbook authors/research...good show. That's the way to be a college student! Your professor has no rights whatsoever to restrict how you will do your research. You may be required to use a certain number of sources and of a certain type (academic journals, etc), but you cannot be told that an author is off limits. Let the author decide if he/she is too busy. If the professor persists, bring it up with the chair of the department. If that fails, go to the dean. If that fails, find the vice chancellor and keep climbing if you have to.
